Natural products to ease anxiety

First thing in the morning

Positivitea does just what it says on the tin. It brings you up and keeps you feeling happy throughout the day. Their teabags are all ethically sourced and contain only natural ingredients, ranging from marshmallow leaves to Ajwain seeds to chili. They’re a delicious alternative to coffee in the morning if you’re someone whose anxiety is sparked by too much caffeine. A perfect investment, no matter what time of day you prefer a cuppa.

At Work

Everyone’s heard of Rescue Remedy, but there’s a new, more intense formula in the shops. Dr. Bach’s Recovery Plus Emergency Formula is an excellent option to pack away in your handbag for those inevitable moments of stress throughout the day. It comes in either a spray bottle or a handy drop bottle and is small enough to be able to fit into most bags. It contains Bach Flowers, Aspen, Mimulus, and White Chestnut, and in contrast to what you’d anticipate, it tastes delicious. After hearing the news that I had a spontaneous deadline, I was able to take a deep breath, grab my formula and use it to help me calm down. Definitely a recommendation suitable for those who have busy days.

In the bathroom

There’s just something about being able to relax in a hot bath that calms me down. Olverum oil combines ten different oils to give you an absolutely blissful feeling. I’ve always been conscious that too much oil can be a bad thing (in the sense of it stimulating your senses rather than calming them) however I found the opposite with these. Olverum includes (deep breath) Lavender, Juniper, Eucalyptus, Lavandin, Lemon Peel, Siberian Fur Needle, Exotic Verbena, Lime, Geranium and Rosemary. This combination has enough variety for you to pick out different notes throughout your bath, but the oils work together as to not overflow your senses. The smell is instant, and strong enough to hit your mind and body within seconds. I found that by lying back and closing my eyes, I was straight into a deep relaxation – a sort I didn’t think was possible just by adding essential oils to my bath. After a stressful day it was just what I needed, and in a twisted turn of events, I’m now slightly excited for my next busy day just so I can have another bath with the same oils.

Any time of day

A. Vogel Valerian-Hops oral drops are for reducing anxiety regardless of the time of day. The drops have two uses: for calming you down and helping you sleep. Research over the last few years has found they work for many uses, spanning from depression, to ADHD, to insomnia. For reducing anxiety, take 20 drops in a small glass of squash (preferably something with a lot of flavour as the drops are quite strong) and wait about half an hour. For insomnia, take 30 drops up to two hours before you sleep. I found that when I used them for this purpose I slept through the night (a rare occurrence) and woke up feeling refreshed and wide awake. These drops are stronger than you’d think for something so easy to purchase since they’re practically a miracle cure for combatting midday anxiety or sleeping problems.

Just before bed

The Scented Ritual is a brand that produces therapy balms – simple to apply and great for conditioning your mind to slow down at the same time. The Sleep Well balm contains three crucial ingredients: Palmarosa, a natural muscle relaxant, which settles the nervous system, Lavender to support deep sleep, and Ylang Ylang to soothe the mind and body whilst balancing emotions. I’ve been using it every night, and the amazing smell is perfect for getting into sleep mode. The company prides itself on being able to change bad habits over time, and this can be seen through their good reviews – my own included! After just a few days, applying the balm at night has been the perfect way to slow down my heart rate and subconsciously tell my body that it’s time to rest for the night.

Night-time

Doctors are always hesitant to recommend sleeping pills because it’s so easy to become reliant on them, and if you’re anything like me, you will probably feel anxious coming off them. New Nordic’s ‘Melissa Dream’ tablets are great for taking at the end of the day when you want to switch off. Containing Lemon Balm, Camomile, L-theanine and magnesium, they have all the ingredients to aid a good night’s sleep. As they’re entirely natural there’s no physical dependency if you decide to stop taking them. The box recommends taking two tablets before bed and I found they definitely help you relax. As with most sleeping aids they’re not instant, but they give you an excuse to get into bed and read a good book for half an hour or so before nodding off.
